The apps in detail

Kreidebuch

Best for: a timer that writes your score straight into your log.

Kreidebuch is a training log made by The Goodie Company GmbH near Würzburg, Germany. It runs as a web app in the browser and can be added to your home screen. Data is stored on a Hetzner server in Helsinki, Finland.

Kreidebuch is listed first because this page is published by Kreidebuch. That's not a ranking.

Kreidebuch's timer handles For Time with a time cap, AMRAP, EMOM at any interval (E2MOM and so on), Tabata, and intervals with work, rest and station changes, plus multi-part workouts from the logger. A 3, 10 or 15-second countdown runs before the start, voice cues call out “halfway” and “10 seconds left”, and the screen stays on. When you stop, the result is already in the form. Vibration only works on Android, because Safari doesn't support it in iPhone web apps.

Strengths

  • WOD formats, a timer, 145 benchmarks and lifts with sets, RPE and 1RM in one app
  • Available in English and German
  • Works without a box, with your own movements and workouts
  • JSON and CSV export is free
  • Works offline and syncs later
  • Imports from BTWB, Wodify, SugarWOD, Strong, Hevy and Fitbod (Premium)

Limitations

  • Not a native app: no Apple Watch app, no Apple Health connection, no vibration on iPhone
  • New, with few users so far
  • No box management software, no class leaderboards or rankings
  • Planning, templates, insights, strength programs and import need Premium

Price: Free with the timer, logging, history, benchmarks, PRs per lift and export. Premium costs €5.99 a month or €53.99 a year. New accounts get a 14-day Premium trial.

Ratings: Kreidebuch isn't listed in the app stores, so it has no store ratings.

What's a good EMOM timer app?

SmartWOD Timer, Seconds Pro and Kreidebuch all have an EMOM mode. SmartWOD and Seconds Pro also run on the Apple Watch; Kreidebuch lets you set any interval (E2MOM, E3MOM) and logs the result afterwards.

Is there a CrossFit® training timer for the Apple Watch?

SmartWOD Timer and Seconds Pro list the Apple Watch on the App Store. BTWB has a watch timer called “Tempus” (beta). WODProof and Kreidebuch have no watch app; Kreidebuch is a web app.

Kreidebuch runs in the browser on any phone or computer, so there's nothing to install from a store. You do need an account to use it. SmartWOD, Seconds Pro and WODProof are store apps.

What's the difference between AMRAP and EMOM?

In an AMRAP you do as many rounds and reps as possible in a fixed time, and your score is how far you get. In an EMOM you start a set amount of work at the top of every minute and rest for whatever's left of that minute. A good timer shows the remaining time for an AMRAP and the current round for an EMOM.
