BTWB vs SugarWOD: a sourced comparison

Beyond the Whiteboard and SugarWOD are two of the best-known WOD trackers. Here's how they differ, what they cost and how to move between them, with Kreidebuch as a third option.

Last checked: October 25, 2026

Short answer: SugarWOD is free for athletes and shines in boxes that run on it: programming, scoreboard, community. BTWB costs a subscription and gives you deeper analytics, worldwide leaderboards, macros and an Apple Watch timer in return. If you need neither and want WODs and lifts in one log, Kreidebuch is a third option worth a look.

“Not stated” means we found nothing about it on the store listings, the vendor's website or its help center. It doesn't mean the feature is missing. We didn't test the apps ourselves; the values come from the sources below. The “Tracking” row repeats the App Store privacy label (“Data Used to Track You”) as of October 25, 2026.

The key differences

  • Price: SugarWOD is free for athletes; the box pays. BTWB is a subscription: its pricing page says $9.99 a month, a help article says $7.99.
  • Without a box: Both work without a box: SugarWOD through an “Independent Athlete” account, BTWB through the public “Varied Not Random” gym or your own workouts.
  • Analytics: BTWB shows maxes for 1, 3, 5 and 10RM, Fitness Level and Imbalances, plus weigh-ins and macros. SugarWOD detects PRs per rep count and calculates percentage charts.
  • Benchmarks: SugarWOD lists 1,000+ named workouts including the Open. BTWB groups benchmarks into sections such as Girls and Heroes; we found no total count.
  • Timer and Apple Watch: SugarWOD has AMRAP, Tabata, EMOM and interval timers; the App Store doesn't list the Apple Watch. BTWB has “Tempus” (beta) for Timed, Rounds For Time and AMRAP, also on the watch.
  • Taking your data with you: Both export CSV. BTWB imports SugarWOD and Wodify exports; SugarWOD only imports for whole gyms, not individuals.
  • Language: SugarWOD lists English and Spanish on the App Store. For BTWB the App Store lists English only, while its help center lists 16 languages.

  • Timer (beta) doesn't support EMOM, built-in rest or strength sets yet, per its help center
  • Mixed formats such as For Time plus EMOM only via notes

Switching between SugarWOD and BTWB

SugarWOD to BTWB: in SugarWOD, go to “More” → “Export Workouts” and the CSV arrives by email. Per BTWB, you send that file to import@data.btwb.com. Named workouts such as the Girls and Heroes, run and row intervals and simple weightlifting results come across.

BTWB to SugarWOD: BTWB exports a CSV on its website, but per its help center SugarWOD doesn't import data for individual athletes, only whole-gym imports done by the SugarWOD team.

To Kreidebuch: Kreidebuch imports BTWB and SugarWOD exports with Premium and shows a preview first. Duplicates are skipped.

  • Planning, templates, insights, strength programs and import need Premium

Price: Free with the timer, logging, history, benchmarks, PRs per lift and export. Premium costs €5.99 a month or €53.99 a year. New accounts get a 14-day Premium trial.
